Unlike Windows Server 2008 and many backup products, BackupAssist supports tape drives, which is a great option if you use tape drives as part of your server backup plan.

BackupAssist has an easy-to-use restore console with a powerful search tool for retrieving files. It also provides disk imaging for full system recovery, and it has a Centralized Monitoring Console that can help you easily manage your backup jobs. The console is capable of managing numerous servers. Overall, this Windows server software does just about everything we were looking for, and we easily found it to be one of the best backup products available.

Unlike many software products, BackupAssist just offers one version that does everything, rather than standard and advanced versions or versions specifically for SQL or Exchange servers. This software can back up directories and Windows, Exchange servers and SQL servers.

It also has VSS support so it can back up open files in real time and create ZIP64 compliant backups. For security, especially during internet transfers of data, BackupAssist provides 256-bit AES encryption. In terms of the backup features we were specifically looking for, it has everything except drive spanning, which is a function not everyone needs.

Scheduling & Reporting:

BackupAssist has all of the scheduling and reporting tools we were looking for. With this Windows backup software you can schedule backups by the hour, day, week or month, or in customized intervals. This software also includes a great tool for scheduling that is very visually oriented with color coding to make understanding your backup schedule even easier. It also comes preconfigured with the option of choosing a popular backup scenario such as Grandfather-Father-Son or other suggested backup schedules. This software can also create reports and event logs and can send out alerts.

Recovery & Restore:

Since this software performs disk imaging, it can restore all of your data, including software. It can restore to system state or bare metal, and it can restore to specific restore points. To make the restoration process easy, this backup software has a unique tool called the BackupAssist Restore Console that manages the various engines the software utilizes for backing up and restoring data. These engines include file replication, Rsync, Zip, Zip to Tape, Windows Imaging and Mailbox backup. These powerful tools help facilitate fast recovery of complete and accurate files and images. This console can also help you easily find specific files you are looking for and the version you need. Once you find the file you want to restore, the restoration process is only three simple steps.

Supported Backup Media:

BackupAssist excels at providing you numerous backup media choices. This software can back up to all portable disc types and disk devices, as well as cloud-based storage spaces such as FTP servers and Amazon S3 via s3rsync.com. It can also back up to tape drives, external HDDs, Iomega REV drives, RDX drives, NAS, Snap Servers, flash drives and local directories. Basically, it can back up to any drive connected by USB, FireWire or eSata. However, keep in mind that the tape backups do not support disk imaging, but the disk drives do.

Ease of Use:

Implementing a complex backup schedule across numerous servers, PCs or devices can be intimidating. So we looked for Windows backup software that is easy to use, regardless of your level of experience. We found BackupAssist uncomplicated, and the main user interface includes icons and other visuals to help make using the software easier. The only thing we found a bit complicated is figuring out which add-ons are needed to run specific processes, such as the add-on for backing up to tape and email mailbox backup. However, once you have everything set up, running your backups and restoring files is relatively simple.

Help & Support:

You can contact BackupAssist by telephone or email with product questions. Online they also post support documentation such as how-to’s, white papers and videos. They also host an active support forum, and they post helpful articles to their blog regularly. The only customer service tool we would like to see them add is chat support.

Summary:

BackupAssist is one of the best server backup solutions we have seen. 

 

It provides full disk imaging, works with all types of backup media and with Exchange and SQL servers. This backup software does have a few short comings. For example, it does not have a remote restore tool or drive spanning. But overall it is a capable product and a good choice for small businesses looking for an affordable backup solution.

EaseUs Todo Backup Server offers several advanced backup tools including the ability to clone files. This application has the ability to copy a partition, a dynamic volume or the hard drive. In addition, you can mount a partition image to a virtual partition to copy files.

You can even assign the application to back up your data each time you perform certain functions, such as logging in to the computer or powering the computer on.

With this Windows server backup application, you can easily create your own backup plan. From one simple-to-use interface, you can write, delete, edit and have full control of your backup. You can set the application so you receive alerts and email notifications after a backup has been completed. It also offers support for a USB drive, virtual machine and internal IDE or SATA drives. It also supports backing up to tape, one of the more advanced features on this application. You can also back up to RAID arrays, but you'll need to install drivers in order to for the software to recognize this media type (as well as several other less-common storage devices).

One of the advantages of using the Todo Backup Server is its easy-to-use interface. We found this software application to be self-explanatory and so simple to use that those without any extensive background in computers can figure it out. The interface is separated into the different processes, including backups, restoring and recovery. Each process menu contains several subcategories that enable you to quickly choose the specific function you want to perform. Each tool walks you through the process and specifies what information you'll need to complete the desired function. Some features are so simple to use, such as the enable or disable PreOS tool, that you simply click on the step and it does everything for you.

This Windows server backup software is quick and easy to install, a process which can often be a difficult and troublesome task with other applications,. We didn’t have to endure several tedious steps or contact customer support for any installation related questions. In addition, with similar applications the restoring process can be long and frustrating, but with Todo Backup Server, things moved quickly and smoothly.

Help & Support:

The EaseUs Todo Backup Server software doesn’t meet our full expectations regarding help and support. This is because they offer email as the only option for contacting a customer support representative. No telephone or chat support is available, which means there's no way to talk to a representative immediately.

A support forum is available on the EaseUs website that allows you to receive additional assistance and support from both users and EaseUs. EaseUs provides manuals, user guides and online step-by-step assistance for some of the more complex and newer features on this application. On the EaseUs website, you will also find a knowledge base center providing videos and other tutorials for several functions and features of the software. There is a FAQs section with answers to several commonly asked questions and information regarding upgrades and commonly used terms.

Summary:

EaseUs Todo Backup Server is a user-friendly Windows server backup application that provides a large selection of backup, restore and recovery tools. This application offers both incremental and differential backup and imaging. It also offers excellent scheduling capabilities and allows you to send alerts and email notices. You can also view, edit and delete activity logs. This application isn't our top backup server application because it doesn't offer as large of a selection of supported backup media, and we are disappointed with the lack of options for contacting a customer support representative. However, the large selection of features, the easy-to-use interface and step-by-step online assistance make the EaseUs Todo Backup Server an excellent choice for keeping your data safe and secure.

This software offers a few things that other products do not such as virus scanning and data encryption. NovaBACKUP performs an automatic virus scan before data is backed up, which may be particularly useful if you use an online storage service. It also employs password protection, secret keys and AES data encryption. The AES encryption protocol is the data encryption standard adopted by the U.S. government. It is the first open cipher approved by the National Security Administration and can without a doubt keep your data safe.

Scheduling & Reporting:

NovaBACKUP goes beyond what the Windows server operating system can do in terms of scheduling. This software can be scheduled to back up by the minute, hour, day or month. It can even back up every minute on the minute if you want it to.
