Altaro Backup has exceptional tools for backing up and restoring files. It even has some unique functions for continuous data protection, restoring to specific restore points and incremental backups. We like that this software can restore files to an email address and can back up open files, which not all products offer. This software is one of the easiest to use Windows server backup products for file restoration. However, it does not provide disk imaging or full system state restores.

Altaro Backup is an excellent product for backing up files and versions. It includes continuous data protection, which is the ability to automatically detect file changes, and it can back up the changes immediately. This server backup software also has a technology called ReverseDelta, which provides an incremental backup capability that uses less space than full version backups. Altaro Backup can also be configured to back up dual copies to separate locations for added security of your files. It can even back up open files utilizing Microsoft Volume Shadow technology. As mentioned, this is a great backup tool for files; however, it is not the best product for disk imaging. If you need full disk imaging you will want to select a different backup application.

This Windows server backup tool offers all of the scheduling and reporting tools we were looking for. It can back up by the minute, hour, day, week or month or by unique intervals. Additionally, you can configure your backups to each different device you use it with. This software also has all of the alert and report tools we were looking for, including email notices and reports. Email reports include information such as backup statuses, date and time of backups, the amount of data backed up, the number of changed files and the number of skipped files.

Since this backup software is more intended for file or data backup, it does not have all of the recovery tools we were looking for such as bare metal recovery and system state restore. However, it can back up files, folders, groups of folders and deleted files. Unlike many products, it also has a remote restore function that can restore files and have them sent to a specific email address. You can also set up the software to send you email notifications when a backup fails.

Altaro Backup can back up to external drives connected by USB and eSata and fileserver network shares connected by UNC paths and mapped drives. Of course it can also back up to network attached storage devices. However, this software is not designed to back up to CDs or DVDs or to online storage services.

We found this server backup software easy to use. It clearly explains most terms you might need clarification on. For example, the main screen gives you a choice of “back up now” or “Go Back in Time and Restore.” And the left navigation board can be used to easily move between the dashboard, reports, advanced settings, email notifications and backup folders. The reports are also easy to understand and include helpful graphics.

This Windows backup software comes with a PDF or online user guide, and they post an active forum on their website. You can also contact them directly by email. Altaro relates that they respond to email within 24 hours, but we would like to see them offer telephone or chat support as well.

Summary:

Altaro Backup is a great windows server backup tool for those looking for powerful continuous data backup protection for files. This application is easy to use and can even back up open files. We can definitely recommend this software to those who do not need disk imaging.

Active@ Disk Image Pro Review : Windows Server Backup Advantages

Active@ Disk Image does as the name implies, which is disk imaging. This is a high-end feature for those that desire not just file recovery but application recovery as well. This Windows server backup software can back up any file type supported by PCs, and it supports a wide variety of disk type storage devices.

This backup software comes in two versions: Standard and Pro. Both versions are the same with only one major difference. The Pro version, which we reviewed, provides backup support for incremental imaging. They also offer enterprise and OEM licenses and discounts to educational institutions.

This server backup software has most of the backup features we were looking for with the exception of encryption and other security technologies like virus scanning. However, you should already have good safety protocols in place to secure your information. This software does have password protection though.

The backup tools it does have include incremental and differential imaging and support for basic and dynamic volumes. It can run on most Windows operating systems and supports FAT16, FAT32, NTFS, CDFS and UDF file types. Active@ Disk Image can also split data into chunks, and it provides a variety of compression levels. This is a case where just because a product is ranked lower than others does not mean it is an inferior product; this software is easy to use and provides disk imaging at the server level for an affordable price.

As with most server backup software, Active@ Disk Image can be scheduled to back up by the day, week, month or any special time interval. The Pro version can be configured to run incremental image backups as well.

This Windows server backup software can easily restore files or entire images, even to different sized media with utilizing partitions. Disk imaging is a function not offered by all backup software. Rather than just file backup, imaging can take an entire “picture” of a drive and restore all functionality, including applications. In terms of rescue bootable media, Active@ Book Disk Lite can start a PC from CD, DVD or a USB flash drive.

Active@ Disk image can support numerous backup media disk types including internal and external hard disk drives, solid state disks, network attached storage devices and – experimentally – Blu-ray and HD DVDs. It also supports single-layer and dual-layer CDs and DVDs. It does not support backup to tape or tape drives or to online storage services.

Server backup software can be intimidating, and small business owners may be a bit nervous about implementing their own backup plan, so we looked for easy-to-use software that can perform complex tasks. This Windows backup software is simple to use. It includes convenient details like progress status bars and task wizards to make it even easier to use. One of the best tools it has is a tool called Explore Image that will show you everything that is on an image so you can restore only specific files if needed.

You can contact Active@ Disk Image in a variety of ways, including by telephone, fax, chat and email. We contacted them by instant chat with a few technical questions and found their customer service to be quite helpful and knowledgeable. They also post some FAQs online that cover sales, customer support and technical questions.

Summary:

This Windows server backup software is easy to use and provides powerful disk imaging to facilitate zero data loss should a problem occur. We found Active@ Disk Imaging to be a good product for those who need incremental imaging and do not back up to tape.

GRBackPro 7 Review : Windows Server Backup Advantages

GRBack Pro has a competitive collection of backup tools, though a rather short list of restore options, which is the main reason we ranked this product lower than its competitors. However, this Windows server backup software works with all Windows operating systems and can back up to all disk types. It also has good backup tools and scheduling options.

This Windows server backup software has most of the backup tools we were looking for, with the exception of disk imaging and data encryption. It does provide incremental and differential backup of files and open file backup utilizing Windows VSS support. It even offers drive spanning, which few products provide. Drive spanning means it can separate one data set onto two or more backup devices.

GRBack Pro offers good scheduling and reporting options, including custom schedule options and email alerts. Using this Windows server backup software you can back up by the minute, hour, week or month – or by any time increment you desire. Recently they have updated this software to support more event options when it comes to reporting for more customized reporting options.

This is a weak spot in the Windows backup software. It can restore data, deleted files and the registry and it can restore to a specific restore point; but it does not offer system state restore or bare metal recovery. And since it does not provide disk imaging, the software is more applicable for file recover than full system recovery. Additionally, it does not provide the ability to create bootable media such as a bootable CDs or DVDs.

This server backup software can back up to most disk devices and tape if it is seen as a visible drive letter in Windows, such as (F:) or (D:) drives. It can back up to USB and FireWire connected devices and HDD and SDD type drives and SATA drives. GRBack Pro can also backup to online services such as WebDrive, NetDrive and Dropbox.

Considering the complexity of this type of software, GRBack Pro is easy to use, and it includes wizards for streamlining basic processes such as initial configuration. We also found the reports easy to understand, and common tasks such as excluding files from a backup schedule are easy to figure out. The basic layout of the interface is also simple, with just a few tabs across the top and some buttons along the bottom, and most processes are clearly explained.

You can contact GRSoftware by email. Our experience was that they respond to their emails in a timely manner and answer questions thoroughly. They can also help you set up your initial backup schedule, and they provide restore support should you need it. We would like to see them offer telephone support or instant chat, but they do not offer this type of support at this time.

Summary:

GRBack is good Windows server backup software for file backup and recovery, and it provides a variety of backup device options. However, we would like to see more restore and recovery options, the ability to create bootable media and disk imaging.

Backup for Workgroups 6 Review

Backup for Workgroups was created for small-business owners who want to backup all of the files from every computer on their network. Often these groups of computers are called workgroups, and each computer is called a workstation or client. This Windows server backup software is easy to install on your server or PC, and it can manage the back up and restoration options for all of your other computers. It also supports all Windows operating systems, even if some of the client computers are running different versions.

In general, this an adequate product for backing up files, but we would like to see it offer disk imaging for complete disk recovery and more options for backup media.

This backup software is intended for backing up files, not creating complete disk images. So it has sufficient backup tools, but it does not perform incremental or differential disk imaging. Its tools for file backups are advanced though; it has VSS support, data encryption and it can back up open files. It also has the ability to compress files, but you cannot adjust the compression, it just does it automatically.

Backup for Workgroups will schedule backups by the hour, day or week. It does not offer monthly or by the minute backup support. Additionally it does not support multiple unique backup schedules per device. This server backup software does come with comprehensive reporting tools though. It can create text and event logs and send out email alerts.

This server backup software comes with useful recovery tools but no bootable media options. Backup for Workgroups restores individual and deleted files, and it can perform system state and bare metal recovery. However, be aware that to perform a bare metal recovery, you have to install a temporary copy of Windows.

Backup for Workgroups does not support as many media types as other backup software. For example it does not backup to CDs or DVDs or tape. It also does not support back up to virtual or online storage services. However, it can back up to a variety of drive types, including USB- and FireWire-connected drives, as well as HDD, SDD, SAN and NAS. It also supports RAID arrays.

We looked at this Windows server backup software from the perspective of someone who does not have a lot of experience with this type of software. Though we found Backup for Workgroups fairly easy to use, we would like to see a more up-to-date user interface. On the positive side, they do explain complex functions well and include some wizards for making the configuration process easier. For example, there is a tool to test your firewall for access, and the results also provide port information.

Backup for Workgroups can be contacted for technical and customer support by email, telephone and instant chat. We contacted them by email and received a response in a timely manner, and they answered all of our questions. A major benefit that they offer is a free upgrade to the newest version if you are running a previous version; few companies offer free full-version upgrades. For additional support they also post online FAQs, user guides, installation tutorials and data sheets.

Summary:

Overall, Backup for Workgroups is a highly functional product with advanced tools for backing up files. It is also rather easy to use. However, if you need disk imaging and the ability to create bootable media, you will want to look at one of our higher-ranked products.

Yosemite Server Backup Standard Review

Barracuda Networks offers several server backup products, ranging from a standard entry-level version to an unlimited enterprise-level version. For the purpose of this review we looked at entry-level server products under $500. Barracuda’s product that fits this criteria is Yosemite Server Backup software, which can be licensed to one Windows, Ubuntu or Linux based server.

This server backup software is easier to use than many, and it supports most backup media types, including all disk type devices. We also experienced that their email customer service response time was quick, thorough and knowledgeable. Additionally, this software has good encryption options and can handle all types of schedules, including complex popular scheduling protocols.

This software is the first product on this end of the review list that does not perform disk imaging. However, it does offer the rest of the backup tools we were looking for, including open file backup via VSS support and active directory and volume support. Of course it also provides incremental and differential backup with compression and encryption if needed. It even offers you a choice of encryption levels from 56-bit DES to 256-bit AES with pass phrases.

This Windows server backup software has outstanding scheduling options. It can schedule by the minute, hour, day, week, month or even year. You can set your own rotation schedule or use a simple daily append, grandfather-father-son or a custom rotation. Yosemite also allows you to view your backup schedule in a calendar view. The upgraded versions can also manage complex tape rotation schedules utilizing barcodes for tape management.

The entry-level version of Yosemite server backup has some good restoration tools, but to get functions like bare metal disaster recovery you have to work with an upgraded version. The standard version can restore to system state and restore individual files. Additionally, you can use the Windows backup software to restore to a specific restore point. Yosemite also includes a quick wizard for creating bootable CDs or DVDs.

Yosemite server backup software works with a variety of backup devices, including tape. With this server backup software you can backup to all disk types, CDs, DVDs, autoloaders and robotic libraries. However, keep in mind that that the entry-level version can only be loaded onto one server. If you are going to work with multiple servers and complex library systems you will need the Plus, SBS or Unlimited edition.

This Windows backup software takes the complex process of backing up multiple workstations to multiple devices and makes it simple. We also found the layout of the main screen streamlined, well organized and easy to figure out. When you open Yosemite server backup it presents the choices of backup, restore, verify, copy media, create virtual library, make bootable CD/DVD, devices and licenses, with easy-to-understand icons. On the left side you can choose from tasks, jobs and media, status and logs, devices and advanced options. We also like that this server backup software can help you with your tape rotation or backup schedules with pre-formulated, commonly used rotation schedules.

Barracuda Networks offers some helpful free support options including email and telephone support 12 hours a day, five days a week. The free support also includes software updates. If you choose to upgrade to the enhanced maintenance and support plan, you can utilize 24/7 telephone support, both stateside and internationally. They also host an online user manual, help files and a technical forum with over 51,000 posts.

Summary:

Overall Yosemite Server Backup software is easy to use and comes with exceptional scheduling and encryption tools. Barracuda Networks also provides helpful free support. This is good Windows server backup software for those who do not need complete disk imaging.

Continuous Data Protection 3.0 Standard Review

Continuous Data Protection provides an efficient and complete server backup solution. It is intended to create one initial disk copy then it backs up only the changed items, which it can do quickly and proficiently. This Window server backup software is for disk-based storage, which means it's not specifically designed to work directly with online storage services or FTP. It supports all disk types, including network-attached storage (NAS) and storage area networks (SAN).

R1 Software offers a variety of backup solutions for Windows and Linux based servers. They provide enterprise, advanced and standard versions. We looked at the standard version, which is their entry-level product. This version is for those looking to back up one to five servers, and it can run on Windows or Linux based servers.

Backup Features:

One of the advantages of using Continuous Data Protection is that it provides a fast backup option so your bandwidth and server usage remains low. So there is almost no noticeable slowdown to your other processes. It also supports advanced file and folder exclusion tools. This Windows server backup software also has block-level delta storage, which means it only stores one version, until it is changed, across unlimited restore points. It also has VSS support for open and locked file backup.

Scheduling & Reporting:

This software can perform scheduled backups by the hour, day or month, or as often as every 15 minutes. It is also capable of managing unique schedules per device, and it can create event logs and send out alerts.

Recovery & Restore:

This software also employs a technology called CDP 3 Disk Safe, which means it can archive up to 64TB of recovery points per disk and you can configure how many recovery points you want to retain. Continuous Data Protection is primarily intended for complete restores rather than file recovery; however, it can be used to restore files and deleted files, since you can restore to recovery points that date prior to the deletion of the file. This Windows backup software can even restore multiple jobs simultaneously without system slowdown. It can create all types of bootable media, including CDs, DVDs and USB drives.

Supported Backup Media:

This software is primarily designed for backing up to directly-attached and network-attached storage devices including IDE, SATA, SCSI, SAS, ISCSI, Fibre Channel, Dynamic Disks (Software RAID), Hardware RAID and solid state drives (SSD). It supports NTFS file types, 512 byte to 64KB cluster sizes. For virtual type interactions it supports MS Hyper-V, Citrix XenServer 5, Xen Source Hypervisor, VMWare and MS Virtual Servers. It is not intended to work with tape or tape drives. The web-based interface works with Firefox and Windows Explorer.

Ease of Use:

This software has a familiar Windows-type layout, though we have to admit it was a bit harder to use than some of the other backup applications we reviewed. However, Continuous Data Protection can perform extremely complex backup protocols, and we expected a bit of a learning curve. At first you may be intimidated by a wall of restore points with long file names, but once you get used to the software you will find it functional and efficient. Plus it has tools for streamlining process, such as a bulk editor.

Help & Support:

R1 Soft can be contacted pre-sales by chat or telephone. To access their email address and their support section they require that you provide your contact information, which is a bit annoying if you just have a few pre-sales questions. In terms of post-sales support, the first year comes with free maintenance and the second year is 20 percent off the retail price. We attempted to use their chat service while reviewing this product and found that the static chat link on the top right of the page worked but the floating chat link did not. They also host a forum, a wiki page, a blog and profiles on the social media sites Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.

Summary:

Continuous Data Protection by R1Soft is a perfect product for those who need continuous backup protection for their servers. It can manage numerous restore points, and it can protect open and locked files in real time. However, it is not a good choice if you want to back up to tape devices.

Total Backup Recovery Server 7 Review

This server backup software can easily run complex backup schedules and can perform bare metal recoveries. Like NovaStor it also provides 256-bit AES encryption for file security, and it provides PXE support. What is refreshing about Total Backup Recovery is that even though it can execute extremely complex tasks and utilize the latest technologies it is surprisingly easy to use. FarStone also provides free telephone and email technical support, which is extremely valuable to small business owners setting up a backup schedule for the first time.

Do You Want To Know More A bout windows server backup field ?

... What It Do ?

... Advantages ?

Backup Features:

Total Backup Recovery provides all of the backup functions you could ever need, including space- and time-saving incremental and differential imaging. Imaging is different than regular backup in that it provides full mirror-type copies of disks for full recovery of data, including applications. This type of image can also be used to migrate data from one machine to another. This software has tools specifically for migrating data from one drive to a new drive, which is a great time-saving tool if you are upgrading your computers or servers.

In terms of the backup features we were looking for, it can do just about everything with the exception of drive spanning, which is not a function everyone needs. Otherwise it does everything including open file backups, versioning, cloning, partition imaging and more. This software even has a tool for controlling the software’s bandwidth usage. As mentioned, this is one of the few server backup products that provides advanced security with 256-bit AES encryption for complete data protection.

Total Backup Recovery can back up open files for Microsoft Exchange servers, SQL servers, SharePoint servers, VMware servers and Oracle servers, and it can operate across platforms. It also has built-in VMware P2V and V2P support, which means you can create a backup image of a VMware host machine or convert a Total Backup Recovery image to VMWare format (VMDK) to run on a virtual machine.

Scheduling & Reporting:

This server backup software is designed to run on its own, for 100-percent worry-free backup. It can back up by any time increment, and you can set customized intervals per device. Total Backup Recovery comes with some of the best reporting options we have seen, including log views and pre- and post-command email notifications. Basically, with this software you create your initial backup schedule and trust it to do its job. It will email you if an error occurs and will send you event logs as needed. This backup software has a unique feature called quota management. Quota management is the ability to enforce quota limits on storage usage per work station. Total Backup Recovery automatically can reuse the “oldest” backup space for the new backup data sets.

Recovery & Restore:

Since this server backup software provides full disk imaging, you can also expect full data recovery, even software recovery. It can perform bare metal restores and can even restore to dissimilar hardware, which is especially useful when migrating data to a new machine. It also has a tool for creating recovery CDs or DVDs, and it has a tool called FileRescue-911 for booting into a crashed system to retrieve files. In terms of bootable media, it can create all types of bootable media that we were looking for, including CDs, DVDs and USB devices. And it provides PXE and WinPE support. PXE support means any client (which is any PC that is being managed by the software) to remotely boot the recovery manager from the PXE server; this is another way to reboot a crashed or inoperable workstation.

Supported Backup Media:

Total Backup Recovery can back up to nearly any device and remote location. This software can back up to any local hard drive, USB drive, FireWire-connected drive, network share, disc or any network-attached storage device. It can also be scheduled to back up to remote FTP servers and provides full RAID disk array support. However, it does not back up to tape or tape drives, and it is not designed to work with specific online storage services.

Ease of Use:

FarStone has successfully managed to create a Windows server backup application that anyone can use. When you compare the feature list to the user interface you will be surprised at how simple the software is to configure. The software has a well-organized presentation with quick start options for routine tasks and convenient previous, next and cancel buttons. It also has easy-to-use tools for creating bootable media and PXE images, and it has a quick universal restore tool.

Help & Support:

This server backup software comes with free technical support by telephone and email. Generally they report that they answer emails within two business days if you are using a registered product. Online they also post a plethora of helpful information including FAQs, product manuals, data sheets, a solutions guide and articles, as well as driver downloads and software updates.

Summary:

We were impressed with Total Backup Recovery.
 It can provide
peace of mind along with complete restoration and data migration. Additionally, it is one of the few products at this price point that provides support for Exchange, SQL, Oracle and VMware as well as all recent Windows server versions. This is a great tool for those needing full disk imaging and timely and relevant email notifications.
