Backup for Workgroups was created for small-business owners who want to backup all of the files from every computer on their network. Often these groups of computers are called workgroups, and each computer is called a workstation or client. This Windows server backup software is easy to install on your server or PC, and it can manage the back up and restoration options for all of your other computers. It also supports all Windows operating systems, even if some of the client computers are running different versions.

In general, this an adequate product for backing up files, but we would like to see it offer disk imaging for complete disk recovery and more options for backup media.
This backup software is intended for backing up files, not creating complete disk images. So it has sufficient backup tools, but it does not perform incremental or differential disk imaging. Its tools for file backups are advanced though; it has VSS support, data encryption and it can back up open files. It also has the ability to compress files, but you cannot adjust the compression, it just does it automatically.
Backup for Workgroups will schedule backups by the hour, day or week. It does not offer monthly or by the minute backup support. Additionally it does not support multiple unique backup schedules per device. This server backup software does come with comprehensive reporting tools though. It can create text and event logs and send out email alerts.
This server backup software comes with useful recovery tools but no bootable media options. Backup for Workgroups restores individual and deleted files, and it can perform system state and bare metal recovery. However, be aware that to perform a bare metal recovery, you have to install a temporary copy of Windows.
Backup for Workgroups does not support as many media types as other backup software. For example it does not backup to CDs or DVDs or tape. It also does not support back up to virtual or online storage services. However, it can back up to a variety of drive types, including USB- and FireWire-connected drives, as well as HDD, SDD, SAN and NAS. It also supports RAID arrays.
We looked at this Windows server backup software from the perspective of someone who does not have a lot of experience with this type of software. Though we found Backup for Workgroups fairly easy to use, we would like to see a more up-to-date user interface. On the positive side, they do explain complex functions well and include some wizards for making the configuration process easier. For example, there is a tool to test your firewall for access, and the results also provide port information.
Backup for Workgroups can be contacted for technical and customer support by email, telephone and instant chat. We contacted them by email and received a response in a timely manner, and they answered all of our questions. A major benefit that they offer is a free upgrade to the newest version if you are running a previous version; few companies offer free full-version upgrades. For additional support they also post online FAQs, user guides, installation tutorials and data sheets.
Summary:
Overall, Backup for Workgroups is a highly functional product with advanced tools for backing up files. It is also rather easy to use. However, if you need disk imaging and the ability to create bootable media, you will want to look at one of our higher-ranked products.
